Always check your power cables.

If your computer mysteriously decides that it's not going to power up at all, first have a quick look at the back of the computer and check that the power supply cable is plugged in correctly and isn't moving around in it's socket. Also check the end that's plugged into the wall or a power board and see if it's plugged in correctly. You would be surprised at how often this happens.

Is your wired network slow? Check where the power cords are.

As a rule you should never run network cables (Ethernet cables) alongside power cables or power cords. The power cables can cause electrical interference along the network cables that can considerably affect the way your network performs. Always try to keep them separated where possible.

Can’t get onto your wireless network on your laptop?

Most modern laptops will come with a switch at the front or side of the case, or a button just under the monitor to turn it's wireless connections on or off. If you find that all of a sudden your laptop can't find your wireless router, have a quick look to check if you haven't accidentally turned your wireless connections off. If this hasn't helped you get back online give The Owl a call on 1800 THE OWL or send us an email so we can help to solve your problem.

File and Registry Cleaners/Boosters - The Owl says NO!

We've come across many people using these products. We STRONGLY recommend against using any of these types of software. The main reason is that they do very little to increase the performance of your computer.

Registry keys and "junk" files take up an extremely small amount of space on your computer, so there isn't a lot of advantage to using these programs. On the negative side the potential for these programs to severely damage a computer is surprisingly high. All it takes is for a few important registry keys to be accidentally removed and all of a sudden your previously working computer is acting like a door stop.

There is also lots of software all over the Internet that pretends to be a cleaner but is in fact a program designed to load viruses and other malware onto your computer. In our opinion, the negatives far outweigh the positives! For more information please feel free to call us on 1800 THE OWL or send us an email.

Never surf the net without Anti-Virus!

We're constantly amazed at how often this critical rule is ignored. Viruses are written to sneak into your system without you noticing, so even if you're surfing a common website your computer can be exposed. Always ensure you have up-to-date anti-virus software installed on your computer to ensure that none of your personal data is put at risk.

Never, EVER use online banking or credit cards unless you have up-to-date anti-virus software. Give The Owl a call on 1800 THE OWL or send us an email and we'll happily provide you with advice on the best Anti-Virus solutions for your needs

Keep your computer away from dust.

Computers usually have at least two fans inside them (laptops only have one), if not many more depending on the setup. These fans will suck dust into your computer depending on how they are setup. To avoid large build-ups of dust inside your computer we recommend placing it an area that doesn't attract a lot of dust. Dust build-up in a computer will slow moving parts down, like fans, and will also build up on important components causing them to overheat. When a component like a computer's processor heats up, it will slow down it's performance to avoid burning out. This means that your computer won't be running as fast as it can.

Do you hear a clicking sound in your Hard Drive? Call us now!

If you have recently started to hear a clicking sound coming from inside your Hard Drive, this is a warning sign that your Hard Drive may be about to stop working. When this happens it makes it very hard and expensive to recover all of the data that was on the Hard Drive, and if you didn’t have a backup plan in place it will cause you problems getting everything back up and running without a Data Recovery service being performed.

If you do hear this clicking but your computer is still running, give us a call immediately on 1800 THE OWL so we can advise you of your options.

In most cases we recommend replacing the old Hard Disk Drive (HDD, the little device inside your computer that stores your data) with a new one before it permanently gives up. We can also perform a backup service for your existing data for you if you don’t already have a backup yourself.

Do you see strange colours on your monitor?

Strange colours on your monitor can be caused by a loose or incorrectly connected monitor cable or even a damaged monitor cable. The best way to check if this is the problem is to take a look at both ends of the monitor cable to ensure that it is correctly connected at the computer end and at the monitor end. If this tip doesn’t help you with your issue give us a call on 1800 THE OWL or send us an email so we can help you solve your problem.
